Why Powder Coating Is Considered an Environmentally Friendly Medium

Industrial & Manufacturing Blog

If you are considering embarking on a paint project on your home on metallic items such as a shed, a fence or even gates, then you should consider powder coating. This type of coating is electrostatically applied onto surfaces to create an impermeable finish. It is suitable for an array of applications as you can choose from a wide assortment of textures as well as colours depending on your aesthetic preferences. In addition to this, powder coating is an eco-friendly medium when compared to conventional painting supplies. So why is it that powder coating is considered an environmentally friendly medium?

The powder used is reusable

The powder coating process is done through spraying of the medium onto the required surface. As such, it is not uncommon to find some of the powder has collected on the floor after the project is finished. With wet paint that as trickled onto the floor; all you would be able to do is clean it off with some turpentine. This is not the same with powder coating. All the powder that did not stick to the surface can be collected and reused for a different project. This means that powder coating is a less wasteful medium when compared to regular paint.

Powder coating creates less hazardous waste

Getting rid of paint that cannot be reused contributes to a significant amount of waste in landfills and in the earth itself. Since these paints are not soluble, the chemical compounds in them simply dissipate into the environment. Powder coating, on the other hand, is made of resin and pigment. This means it has considerably fewer chemical constituents. This, in turn, ensures that it creates less hazardous waste in the environment.

Powder coating is not toxic

Other than being harmful to the environment, paints can also be hazardous to humans, animals and plant life. One of the major components of paint is solvents. These solvents are what function to keep the paint viscous. However, the same solvents also contain an array of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). These can prove toxic if you inhale them on a constant basis. Since powder coating does not need to be in liquid form, it has a negligible amount of these volatile organic compounds as compared to traditional paint. In addition to the VOCs, regular paint is also known to emit toxic fumes. This is why paint projects should only be carried out in areas that are receiving sufficient ventilation. With powder coating, you may not even have to open the windows, as it does not release any toxic fumes.

Creating a Safe Environment: Industrial and Manufacturing Facilities

If you work in or run an industrial or manufacturing facility, safety is key. In this blog, we are going to talk a lot about safety. However, we are also going to veer into other aspects of these industries as well. There will be posts directed toward consumers, business owners, workers and many others. Before you start reading, let me introduce myself. My name is Steve. I used to volunteer at an animal refuge where I put together a lot of buildings and frequently visited sheet metal processing facilities, fence manufacturing companies and similar businesses. I was incredibly interested in what they did so I decided to create this blog. Thank you for reading.
